Sports In Iran
One of the most important daily activities for people in ancient Iran was sports and physical activity.
Sportsmen who bravely and physically protected their families and country when necessary were accorded a particular prestige by society.
The people took great pride in their sportsmen and enthusiastically greeted them everywhere. They also complimented and respected them for their valiant actions.
Iranian Zoroastrians, who had a monotheistic religion, were taught to seek the beauty of heaven in their prayers before turning to physical prowess and mental capacity. A strong, healthy body was something they valued. Iran football team is the most popular in sport.
Football Is Iran’s Most Popular Sports
Iran football team is the most popular in sport. Three AFC Asian Cup victories (1968, 1972, and 1976), six times qualified for the FIFA World Cup (1978, 1998, 2006, 2014, 2018, and 2022), and won the gold medal in the Asian Games four times (1974, 1990, 1998, and 2002).
Iranian Premier Football League
Since the Iranian Premier Football League was founded ten years ago, there has been substantial growth. Iranian athletes compete in several top European leagues, and some Iranian teams have even employed European athletes or coaches.
Asian Champion
The Asian Club Championship has been won by Esteghlal and Pas three times (1970, 1991, and 1993), but the last time an Iranian team won the AFC Champions League was in the 1992–1993 campaign.
There are few places to play football or other sports in Iran. The largest football stadium in Iran, the Azadi Stadium, contains 100,000 seats. Two of Iran’s most well-known teams, Esteghlal and Perspolis, have stadiums used for national matches.
Iran’s most popular sport is football, followed by volleyball and wrestling. Iran’s football team is ranked first in Asia by FIFA at number 20, ahead of South Korea and Japan.
Mammoth Decision
The Iran football team made the bold decision to forgo singing the anthem before their opening World Cup match against England in support of the country’s protesters.
Mahsa Amini, a woman in her twenties, died in September while being cared for by the morality police. Masha Amini, 22, was reportedly slain after being apprehended for failing to properly cover her hair with a hijab. Tensions in Iran erupted. Since then, nationwide protests have broken out and called into question the legitimacy of the administration while being suppressed by security forces. Hundreds of people lost their lives as a result of the violence.
The protests were held in Mahsa’s 22nd year and in memory of her. Whose Kurdish first name was Jina, has grown to be the biggest women’s rights movement in recent Iranian history. The catchphrase of the movement is “Jin, jiyan, Azadi,” which means “Woman, life, freedom.”
President Ebrahim Raisi met with the players before the team’s flight to Doha for the World Cup. Protesters did not take well to the meeting, and they set team banners on fire the night before the competition.
Solidarity
Some Iran supporters in Qatar also expressed solidarity for the demonstrators back home before the match on Monday. They wore T-shirts with the slogan “Women, Life, Freedom,” which has been the movement’s rallying cry since Amani’s death.
The football team’s decision to remain silent while playing the national anthem on the game’s biggest stage is the boldest move made to date by the nation’s best athletes. Penalties may or may not be imposed on players.

Ehsan Hajsafi, the captain of the Iran football team, sent his condolences to each and every family in Iran who was mourning during a news conference. We sympathize with them and share their pain and must accept that there are issues with our country and that the populace is dissatisfied.
We owe our lives to our country and are here to live up to that obligation by working hard, fighting, giving it our all, scoring goals, and delivering them to the mourning Iranian people. I wish for better conditions and everyone’s happiness.
They need to know that “we are with them, that we support them, and that we are sympathetic to the conditions,” he stated.
England kneel down against Iran football team
Before the game, England made another powerful political statement by kneeling to protest racism and inequality. Although they didn’t kneel during their September friendly, they have decided to do so before each World Cup match.
The England manager, Gareth Southgate, said on Sunday that he believes it makes a powerful message to travel the globe to educate young people in particular about the importance of diversity.
