David Gold, a football legend, dies at the age of 86

West Ham has tragically announced the demise of David Gold, their joint chairman, at the age of 86 after a brief illness.

Gold, a Stepney-born native, achieved success in business and later became joint chairman of Premier League West Ham United Football Club in 2010. His career at the club had its roots during his teenage years as he formed part of their boy’s team aged thirteen to sixteen.

David Sullivan, the co-chairman of the football club, sadly shared on the website that David Gold had passed away. He spoke on behalf of everyone at the club and expressed profound sorrow with a heavy heart.

We experienced unparalleled pride and joy when we acquired West Ham United, our beloved football club, in January 2010.

Sullivan noted that David had an intimate relationship with West Ham United, spending his childhood right by the Boleyn Ground in Green Street and playing for the club at a junior level.

He had West Ham United’s best interests at heart, and his departure is a tremendous sorrow for us all.

The West Ham team and its staff send their deepest sympathies to the family of David Gold, in this difficult time. Manager David Moyes expressed his sadness at the news.

David Gold was a frequent guest of Rush Green, always providing us with bolstering words and assistance.

He was a devoted fan, displaying true devotion and loyalty to the club. He always showed his support for those working behind the stage and was eager to be of assistance. His absence will be deeply felt.

Previously, David Gold had held the position of chairman at Birmingham until 2009 when he offloaded his shares.

When he took the helm of West Ham in January 2010, the club spoke of how his presence had helped to stabilise matters and safeguard their future during a challenging economic climate.

The death of Gold, who was surrounded by his children Jacqueline and Vanessa as well as his fiancée Lesley, was reported by West Ham on Wednesday morning.

Karren Brady, the vice-chairman of Hammers, collaborated with Gold during their time with Birmingham.

She tweeted a tribute to her long-term friend: “He was an incredible person and true gentleman. His passing leaves us with great sadness, but his memory will live on. Rest in peace x”
