Youth Olympic Games

In 2026, the International Olympic Committee will hold the 4th international summer youth Olympics, AKA the 4th summer youth Olympic games. It is an international cultural event, sports and education for young teens that takes place in a city that has been assigned by the International Olympic Committee.

But unlike other youth sports tournaments, these events also feature a number of educational programs aimed at three main areas: athlete safety, performance enhancement, and general well-being. In terms of sports, the schedule takes a clear cue from the Olympic Games. Sport climbing, Breaking, 3v3 ice hockey, 3v3 basketball, mixed National Olympic Committee and mixed gender (NOC) events are just a few of the intriguing new sports, disciplines, and formats included.

To date, there have been a total of 37 sports featured on the Olympic schedule between 2010 and 2026. In 2010, 27 new events were added to the Olympic Games. Both beach volleyball (which replaced volleyball) and field hockey were debuted during the 2014 Games. Beach handball (which took the place of handball), breakdancing, futsal (which took the place of football), karate, roller speed skating, and sport climbing were all new to the 2018 Olympics. In 2019, it is projected that 28 core sports will be confirmed for inclusion in the 2026 Games.

The Youth version likewise places a strong emphasis on educational and cultural features. The education and culture component are not only beneficial to the participants and athletes, also to the youngsters around the world and the locals of the host city and its surrounding areas. Each Games will have a Culture and Education Program to achieve this goal. Athletes from all over the world came together to compete in the first CEP at the 2010 Singapore Games. Classes were offered on a wide variety of topics, from nutrition and fitness to ecology and job search strategies. Local Singaporean students set up kiosks at the World Culture Village to showcase the 205 participating National Olympic Committees.

There were 4,000 athletes at the 2018 Summer YOG in Buenos Aires, and for the very first time, both men and women participated equally. In 2020, 1,872 athletes competed in the Winter YOG in Lausanne. After receiving final approval from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Dakar 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) would have equal opportunities for athletes of both sexes. In Buenos Aires 2018, for the first time in Olympic history, both men and women participated in every sport and event. All 28 traditional Olympic events, plus four additional sports proposed by Paris 2024 and karate, will be featured during the first-ever Olympic Games to be held on the African continent.

YOG Ambassadors, and Athlete Role Models and The Young Reporters are three examples of non-athlete individuals who play important roles in the YOG. The first-ever Youth Summer Olympics in 2010 featured over 3,600 athletes from over 200 countries. Individuals are divided into three groups based on their ages: those aged 15–16, 16–17, and 17–18. Age for the YOG is calculated as of December 31 of the year in which competitor is competing.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) works with the International Sport Federations (ISF) of the individual sports on the Youth Olympic program to establish eligibility requirements for athletes. The International Olympic Committee created the concept of Universality Places to guarantee that athletes from every country could compete in the Youth Olympic Games. Athletes from under-represented countries are guaranteed a specific number of slots in each sport, regardless of their performance in the qualifying round.

The International Olympic Committee and the 2022 Summer Youth Olympics’ host country Senegal reached an agreement in July 2020 to postpone the games until 2026. The young Olympians are given the chance to learn about experience other cultures, Olympic principles, acquire the skills and knowledge necessary in order to be the legit ambassadors of their sport, and enhance their performance and training methods off the playing field through a series of enjoyable and engaging activities, seminars, and group activities. The goal of the Youth Olympic Games is to unite the best 15–18-year-old athletes from all nations around the world.

At the Summer Youth Olympics in 2026, there will be 244 competitions in 35 different sports. The International Olympic Committee gave its stamp of approval to the competition schedule. There will be a total of 28 fundamental sports after the addition of breakdancing, skateboarding, climbing, surfing, and karate. There will be 13 events for mixed teams, 1 open competition, 115 events for men, and 115 events for women. Subsequently, baseball and wushu were included in the list of sports.

IOC President Thomas Bach said Africa is behind Senegal hosting the 2022 Youth Olympics. With true passion for sport and young population, Senegal’s ready. The events and activities will be hosted in Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly, Senegal’s coastal beauties. Macky Sall, the President of Senegal, travelled to Buenos Aires for the historical IOC decision. He said, “Senegal and its young people are proud of the honor you have bestowed upon us.” Africa, the birthplace of humanity and the youngest continent, will host the world’s youthful athletes in 2022. The IOC is glad to count on the four parties, who have unanimously accepted its decision and offered wholehearted support to the selected host. The decision was taken during in the 3rd Youth Olympic Games at 6-18 October in Argentina

The Multinational Olympic Committee (IOC) is a non-governmental, international organization with the stated mission of “bringing peace through the peaceful use of sport to the globe.”. More than 90% of profits are dedicated to the greater athletic community, which equates to daily donations of around $3.4 million USD to help players and sports federations at all levels around the world.
